Pinoys flock to PHL Embassy to avail of Kuwait amnesty

Filipino workers flocked to the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait to avail of the amnesty being offered by the Kuwaiti government to overstaying and undocumented foreign workers.
The one-month amnesty will allow overstaying and undocumented Filipino workers to return to the Philippines without penalty.
A report on State of the Nation with Jessica Soho on Wednesday night said most of those who went to the Philippine Embassy wanted to fix their papers so that they could stay and work in Kuwait legally.
Because of the large number of OFWs who want to avail of the amnesty, Philippine Ambassador to Kuwait Renato Pedro Villa Jr. is appealing to the Kuwaiti government to extend the amnesty to three months.
Kuwait announced the amnesty on January 23, a few days after the Philippine government suspended the deployment of newly hired OFWs to Kuwait due to reports of abuses.
report on Kuwait Times said there are at least 154,000 undocumented foreigners in Kuwait.
The report said the amnesty allows residency violators to leave Kuwait before February 22, 2018 without paying fines.
The last time Kuwait offered such amnesty was in 2011. —KBK, GMA News
