DOLE starts releasing assistance to displaced workers in Boracay
The Department of Labor and Employment started releasing assistance on Tuesday in Bacolod City to displaced workers of Boracay Island.
Atty. Johnson Canete, regional director of DOLE Region 6, said P400 million was allotted by the government for the Boracay Employment Program Adjustment Measures.
Joan Tumabotabo, who worked as a waitress in one of the hotels in Boracay for 9 years, welcomed the help given by the government.
Meanwhile, Marian Decara, who has worked at the housekeeping department of a hotel in the island, said even if she lost her job with the temporary closure of Boracay, she would still go back as soon as businesses in the island will be allowed to operate again.
Canete said the beneficiaries will be receiving more than P4,000 a month for 6 months.
He said that of those who sought for assistance coming from Bacolod City, 108 have been approved and 59 of them already received their cash cards.
Canete said for the whole region, 18,000 workers were displaced with the temporary closure of Boracay.
DOLE is open to give assistance to the displaced workers and continues to receive applications for the assistance project.
