3 RP sailors missing as 3 ships collide in Japan

TOKYO - Rescuers searched for three Filipino sailors who fell overboard Wednesday when their cargo ship collided with two other vessels in southern Japan, Japan's coast guard said.

Six of the nine Filipino crew members of Gold Leader, a Belize-registered ship, have been rescued, said Shoji Hirahara, a regional Coast Guard official.

The coast guard has deployed 11 vessels and four aircraft to search for the three still missing, Hirahara said.

One of the six rescued men was unconscious, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

Gold Leader sank after the collision with a Japan-registered vessel and a tanker about 2.5 kilometers (1.5 miles) southeast of the Akashi bridge in the Akashi Strait, the statement said. Gold Leader was carrying steel products, it said.

None of the five crew members of the Japanese ship was injured, but the status of the tanker's crew was not yet clear, the coast guard statement said. - AP
