Kuwait's highest court to decide on Vecina appeal on April 1

The Kuwaiti court is set to hand down on April 1 the verdict the appeal of May Vecina, the Filipino domestic helper who was sentenced to death by hanging for murdering her six-year-old charge last January 6, 2007, ABS-CBN Middle East Bureau reported Monday.

The Kuwait Court of Cassation or the emirate's highest court was hearing the appeal of Vecina on the death of six-year-old Salem Sulaiman Al Otaibi. She also reportedly stabbed Salem's 13-year-old brother Abdullah and 17-year-old sister Hajer.

Vecina's lawyer Ahmad Qurban said the prosecution and defense panels presented their oral arguments Tuesday at the Court of Cassation and the presiding judge will announce the court's verdict on April 1.

Vecina's lawyer Ahmad Qurban has maintained that his client was mentally disturbed when the murder happened but the Kuwaiti lower court handling her case turned down the defense motion to allow the OFW to undergo psychiatric tests.

The Kuwaiti Court of Appeals had earlier affirmed a lower court's death sentence on Vecina prompting Vecina’s camp to elevate her appeal to the Kuwait Court of Cassation.

Qurban together with the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait led by Ambassador Ricardo Endaya has been negotiating with the victim's parents to sign a tanazul or letter of forgiveness to spare Vecina's life.

Ambassador Endaya said that they would exhaust all legal and extra-judicial means to save Vecina from the gallows.ABSCBN News
