Non-government groups are set to file a complaint before the United Nations against the Philippine and Malaysian governments for human rights violations against Filipino deportees from Sabah, Malaysia.
This, after partylist group Gabriela, Engender Incorporated and Migrante International concluded their fact-finding mission in Zamboanga City.
Migrante International chairperson Connie Bragas-Regalado said some deportees narrated how they were maltreated in detention cells in Sabah, while awaiting deportation.
They said many of them were physically assaulted, aside from having to deal with poor sanitation and bad food.
Regalado said some government agencies failed to note these in their reports.
However, Jolo, Sulu Mayor Hussin Amin reminded the groups to course their complaint in a diplomatic manner, adding that a hastily-filed complaint may affect the Philippines' diplomatic ties with Malaysia.
Amin also believes the Malaysian and Philippine governments should not be blamed since the deportees entered Malaysian illegally.
