PHL recruiters suspend deployment of domestic workers to Singapore
A group of local recruiters has declared a moratorium on the deployment of household service workers to Singapore in a bid to stop their counterparts there from collecting placement fees.
The moratorium started Monday, September 2, according to a statement from the Association of Licensed Recruitment Agencies for Singapore (ALRAS).
“We say no to placement fee collections that are done through deductions from the monthly salaries of the workers,” said ALRAS president Lucita Sermonia in the statement.
Sermonia said they would not resume deployment until the foreign recruitment agencies in Singapore will stop the collection of placement fees.
The moratorium is a private initiative of ALRAS, Sermonia added.
The Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has prohibited the collection of placement fees for overseas domestic workers.
An estimated 1,000 Filipinos leave for Singapore every month to work as domestic workers, according to POEA administrator Hans Cacdac.
