Pinay in HK fined for forgetting to pay for grocery items

HONG KONG — After learning that one of her unmarried daughters in the Philippines was pregnant, a Filipina here stormed out of the grocery store and forgot to pay for the items she took.

As a result, a judge here fined the 42-year-old Filipina 1,200 Hong Kong dollars on July 16 after the Filipina pleaded guilty to "theft."

The Filipina, who works as a domestic helper, was charged for allegedly stealing a bottle of white wine and cheese from a supermarket at a shopping center in Sai Kung in April.

According to the Filipina's private lawyer, his client forgot to pay for the grocery items after she received "distressing news" that one of her three daughters in the Philippines was pregnant.

Asked by Kwun Tong Deputy Magistrate Stephani Tsui May-har why such news was distressing, the Filipina's lawyer said his client still supports her daughters—aged 25, 23, and 22—and that she's the family's sole breadwinner.

Court records show the Filipna first came to Hong Kong in 1998 and stayed with her first employer for 14 years.

At present, she is on her fourth year with her current employer, who attended the hearing and submitted to the court a letter of support for the Filipina.

The judge discounted a third of the original 1,800 Hong Kong dollar-fine for the domestic helper after the latter pleaded guilty to the charge.

Tsui also told the Filipina to stop supporting her grown daughters.

"You can not keep on supporting them forever," Tsui said. —KBK, GMA News - See more at: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/531340/news/pinoyabroad/pinay-in-hk-fined-for-forgetting-to-pay-for-grocery-items#sthash.suQFnwgu.dpuf
