Body formed to protect OFWs



THE Department of Labor and Employment reported that a team tasked to pursue bilateral cooperation agreements between the Philippines and host countries was formed recently to strengthen the promotion of the welfare of overseas Filipino workers.

Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III said this was made possible through Administrative Order No. 138-A, which mandates that the team will negotiate with its counterparts on the coverage of agreements on general labor and standards in foreign countries in close coordination with the Department of Foreign Affairs.
  
Bello said the body is also tasked to provide negotiating plans, as well as in the preparation of implementing protocols and standard employment contracts, if necessary.
  
“The team will prioritize the adoption of measures and mechanisms to protect and promote the welfare and interest of OFWs, and pursue bilateral agreements between our country and host countries,” he said.
  
The team is headed by the Assistant Secretary for Legal, Legislative and Internal Affairs while the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration Deputy Administrators for Land-based and Sea-based concerns will serve as the assistant team leaders.
  
It will be composed of the International Labors Affair Bureau Director, Legal Service Director, Vice-Chairperson of the Bilateral Review Committee, and Labor Attaché.
  
The Labor Attache assigned to the post where the host country is a party to the bilateral agreement shall regularly liaise with the Philippine Embassy or Philippine Consulate.

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
