Filipinos to be repatriated from hurricane-hit Caribbean

MANILA - Dozens of Filipinos who were displaced by Hurricane Irma in the British Virgin Islands will be repatriated, the Philippine Embassy in Washington said Sunday, as the monster storm closed in on Florida after devastating the Caribbean.
"More than 90" of the 264 Filipinos who work in the medical, accounting and construction industries in the British territory asked to be brought home, citing the lack of medicine and essentials, according to the statement.
An embassy team will go to the islands from neighboring Puerto Rico to rescue the Filipinos as soon as possible, said Chargé d’Affaires Patrick A. Chuasoto.
Those who volunteered to be repatriated will be brought directly to the Philippines, the statement said.
A new storm warning was raised in the British Virgin Islands due to Hurricane Jose, a Category 4 storm which was headed towards St. Martin, Barbuda and Anguilla.

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
