While in Davao, Kono is expected to meet with President Rodrigo Duterte and hold bilateral discussions with key cabinet officials on areas of mutual interest, including political, economic, and people-to-people engagement.
The Japanese official is also likely to reiterate his government’s support for the country’s massive infrastructure development under the Duterte administration’s “Build, Build, Build” program and its commitment to peace and development in Mindanao in the wake of the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law.
Sources said that Tokyo and Manila are reportedly negotiating for a joint exercise agreement and more frequent port visits of military ships and aircrafts to shore up alliances and cooperation in the light of fast changing security challenges in the region.
Kono will also lead the ceremonial opening of the Japanese Consulate General in Davao.
“The visit of Foreign Minister Kono is a testament to the strengthened strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan, and an affirmation of our longstanding bilateral friendship,” the Department of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.
