Chopped head of Pinay waitress in Japan found

MANILA, Philippines- The chopped head of a mutilated Filipina in Japan’s Odaiba district was finally discovered on Friday (April 11) in a canal near the victim’s apartment, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

Philippine Embassy in Tokyo Charge d’ Affaires Gina Jamoralin reported that with the recovery of Honiefaith Ratilla Kamiosawa’s head, Japanese police have finally sealed off any doubts about the victim’s identity.

The DFA had earlier refused to confirm the death of the 22-year-old Filipina waitress who was only reported as missing.

A report from Japan-based Mainichi Daily News on Wednesday stated that DNA tests have confirmed that the more than 10 chopped body parts found in a suitcase last April 3 belonged to the Filipina.

With the recent development, Japanese police have named Hiroshi Nozaki, a 48-year-old Japanese national, as a suspect in the case.

Filing of criminal charges against Nozaki are still pending, said DFA spokesperson Claro Cristobal in a text message.

Nozaki was said to be a roommate of Kamiosawa, who worked as a nightclub waitress in Roppongi, a Japanese district known for its nightclubs and bars. They shared an apartment with the victim’s two cousins.

In an apparent attempt to hide the crime, Nozaki, allegedly washed Kamiosawa’s body parts in a laundry machine before stashing it in a suitcase.

After chopping up Kamiosawa’s body, Nozaki tried to kill himself by slashing his wrists in Kawaguchi, Saitama Prefecture. He then called for an ambulance when the suicide failed.

Police believed Kamiosawa could have been killed on the 26th floor unit of the high-rise condominium in the Odaiba waterfront district between 5:30 pm and 8:45 pm on April 3.

The condo unit was shared by Nozaki and three Filipinas who work in the same food service shop in the Roppongi amusement district, also in Minato Ward, according to the police.

Nozaki was arrested on April 6 and has kept his right to remain silent during the investigation.

Japanese police are trying to determine whether Nozaki killed Kamiosawa over rent disputes.
Earlier reports identified Nozaki in a previous mutilation case of another Filipina in 2000 where he was sentenced to three years and six months in jail.

Quoting the Sports Nippon tabloid, wire reports said that Nozaki killed the first Filipina, a 27-year-old woman, in 1999 before burning and flushing the body parts in a toilet. - Mark Joseph Ubalde, GMANews.TV
