UAE mosque named after Emirati who drowned saving Pinoy children

A mosque in the United Arab Emirates has been named after a 20-year-old Emirati who tried to save five Filipino children but lost his life in the process last Oct. 9.

The UAE General Authority for Islamic Affairs and Awqaf (GAIAQ) named the mosque in Ras Al Khaimah after Ahmed Salem, Khaleej Times reported Wednesday.

Salem drowned while trying to rescue six children – five Filipinos and one Sri Lankan – aged 11 to 13, in the rough seas of the Azan area.

But he failed to save a 13-year-old Filipino boy who also drowned.

“We are just trying to make an example of Ahmed Salem who sacrificed his life to rescue others; he has become a role model for all Emirati youth who rush to help others when necessary,” said GAIAQ chairman Dr. Hamdan Muslim.

Muslim added this honors [to anyone] who sincerely participates in the progress and welfare of the UAE.

For their part, Salem's kin welcomed the act, even as leaders and officials visited them and offered condolences.

“Ahmed was so brave and kind, and was ready to sacrifice his life to save others... Naming a mosque after my son will encourage all Emirati youth to follow his steps and do their best in holding the name of their country high,” Salem's father said. — LBG, GMA News
