Bodies of 2 Filipinas missing in Cyprus found

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), through the Philippine Embassy in Athens, is monitoring developments in the investigations involving the murders of three Filipinas in Cyprus.

The DFA also extended its condolences to the families of the victims, whose identities were withheld at the request of their next of kin.
Embassy Charge d’ Affaires (CDA) Judy Barbara Robianes said the Embassy has reported the cases of the missing Filipinas to Cypriot authorities and have continuously followed up with them on those cases.
It is also providing updates on the case to the families.
Embassy representatives are now in Cyprus to meet with authorities on the case and provide assistance to the investigation, including the provision of DNA samples to help in identifying the victims.
It also stands ready to provide assistance to the victim’s families.
The three Filipinas -- one of whom was with her six-year-old daughter -- were reported missing between 2017 and 2018, and authorities have initially thought that they disappeared for  reasons other than a violent crime.
The DFA welcomed the break in the recent investigation with the discovery of bodies on the abandoned mine shaft in Mitsero, Cyprus earlier this month.
It was found out that the self-confessed suspect is a 35-year-old Greek Cypriot and member of the National Guard, and that he met the Filipinas through a dating website.
The child’s remains have not yet been found.  It is hoped that the investigation will give justice to the victims.

China ships maintain presence in key West Philippine Sea areas --- Michael Punongbayan - The Philippine Star

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. Social media seen as cause of rising intermarriages --- Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
