PHL provides legal aid to kin of abused OFW who died in Kuwait

The Philippine government has provided legal assistance to the family of the Filipina maid who died last week after suffering serious physical injuries, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Monday.
Through the Philippine embassy in Kuwait, the DFA said it has "hired a lawyer, who has already filed a criminal case."
The DFA declined to provide further details.
It also said it will shoulder the cost of the shipment of remains of Ma. Constancia Lago Dayag, who was pronounced dead on arrival after being rushed to Al-Sabah Hospital, Kuwait on May 14.
Dayag, 47, who was also reported to have been sexually assaulted, is from Cauayan, Isabela.
"The Department of Foreign Affairs expresses its condolences to the family of the late OFW. The Department will continue to provide legal and other assistance to the next-of-kin of the late OFW Dayag," it said in a statement.
Embassy Charges d'Affaires Noordin Pendosina Lomondot has already met with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kuwait to seek assistance in expediting the release of the forensic report, which is usually processed within four to six weeks.
The Department of Labor and Employment said it may recommend the re-imposition of deployment ban on Filipino domestic workers to Kuwait following the incident.
Rising incidents of abuses against Filipino domestic helpers, where some resulted to death, prompted the Philippine government in 2018 to enforce a deployment ban, sparking a diplomatic row between the two states.
The ban was lifted after a labor pact, which commits Kuwait to provide protection to Filipino workers, was signed in May last year, signaling normalization of the two countries’ relations.
Kuwait is a major labor destination for Filipinos in the Middle East, with over 250,000 currently working there, mostly as domestic helpers. —NB, GMA News
