POEA stops deployment of OFWs to Libya

The Governing Board of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration has imposed a ban on the processing and deployment of all OFWs, including crew change and shore leave of Filipino seafarers in Tripoli and areas within the 100-kilometer radius of the capital.

The POEA Board issued GB Resolution No. 3, series of 2019 as the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) raised on April 8, the crisis alert level in Tripoli from 2 to 3, or voluntary repatriation, to ensure the safety of Filipinos amid tensions in the Libyan capital.

The DFA urged Filipinos in Tripoli and nearby areas to consider getting themselves and their dependents be repatriated to avoid getting caught in the middle of ongoing clashes between rival factions. Alert Level III covers Tripoli and the following areas within a 100-kiliometer radius of the capital: Tajoura; Ghot Romman, Qaraboli, Qasr Khiyar, Esbea, Tarhuana, Bani Waled, Gharyan, Aziziya, Warshifana, Zawia, Surman and Sabratha.

The deployment of OFWs to Libya will not be allowed until the situation in the country stabilizes and the alert level is lowered back to Alert Level II. At least 1,000 overseas Filipino workers and their families are set to be repatriated from the identified areas. /END

MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
