ADVISORY: Italy Passes Law Against Illegal Migration

All Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) are advised of the passage of the Italian Parliament of Law No. 92 (Law 92) titled Security Package’, and sub-titled ‘Measures for a More Secure Life for the Citizens’. The new law aims to stem illegal migration by making it more difficult for foreigners to enter Italy if they do not have the proper documentation. Law 92, which effectively makes illegal entry a crime in Italian jurisdiction, has the following provisions/features, among others: a) Imprisonment from six (6) months to four (4) years and the obligatory arrest of the illegal entrant who will be subjected to a quick trial; b) Phenomenon of the so-called ‘marriage for convenience’ with the sole purpose of acquiring Italian citizenship; c) Establishment of a national data bank to ascertain paternity of a person and blood relationships of foreign citizens; d) Easier expulsions/deportations; e) Arrest and confiscation of properties transferred through illegal titles t...

Manning agencies found recruiting at Luneta face charges

Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) has filed appropriate charges against 19 manning agencies found conducting illegal recruitment activities at Luneta Seafarer’s Center in Ermita, Manila last week. Cacdac said he ordered the operatives of POEA’s Operations and Surveillance Division to assist agents of the Anti-Transnational Crime Division of PNP-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) in the conduct of a special operation against reported illegal recruitment activities in the area. Cacdac said a joint POEA-PNP surveillance team formed for the purpose posed as applicants and inquired about available seafarer positions from representatives of several manning agencies present at the Seafarer’s Center. DOLE warns recruiters on failure to protect deployed domestic workers

"The obligation of a licensed recruitment agency to its hired OFWs does not end upon their deployment to the worksite. The recruitment agency has the continuous obligation to ensure protection of workers, especially domestic workers." Filipina gets 10 years in Delhi jail for drug possession

ABS-CBNnews.com MANILA, Philippines - A Filipina, who was arrested for possessing 2 kilos of heroin in 2006, has been sentenced to 10 years in jail by a court in New Delhi, an India-based news agency reported. Press Trust of India (PTI) reported that the New Delhi court found Ma Sol Baillo guilty of possession of illegal drugs and imposed the minimum jail sentence of 10 years. "Keeping in view the age, family background and all other attending circumstances, the convict is being awarded the minimum sentence of rigorous imprisonment," PTI quoted the court as saying. The 44-year-old Baillo will also have to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh (around US$1,870 or P78,000). Baillo, a native of Manduriao, was arrested in 2006 at the Indira Gandhi International Airport as she was leaving for Bangkok. The heroin was reportedly found in a false bottom of her suitcase. Unique surgery saves Pinay cancer patient in UAE

A unique kind of medical procedure called "keyhole surgery" saved a 44-year-old Filipina cancer patient in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).   The keyhole or laparoscopic surgery on the Filipina was the first of its kind in the UAE and only the fourth in the world, a report of the news site  Gulf News  said last week.   Dr Hafeez Rahman, a laparoscopic and gynaecology surgeon, and founder of International Modern Hospital (IMH) Dubai, said the Filipina patient had uterine cancer.   Rahman said the Filipina had a cancerous lymph node on the inferior vena cava (IVC), a large vein that delivers blood to the heart from the lower extremities, pelvis, and abdomen.
