Biden, Yoon warn North Korea on nukes, unveil deterrence plan

WASHINGTON, D.C.: President Joe Biden and South Korea's Yoon Suk Yeol unveiled a new plan Wednesday to counter North Korea's nuclear threat, with the US leader issuing a blunt warning that such an attack would "result in the end of whatever regime" took such action. The new nuclear deterrence effort calls for periodically docking US nuclear-armed submarines in South Korea for the first time in decades, bolstering training between the two countries, and more. The declaration was unveiled as Biden hosted Yoon for a state visit at a moment of heightened anxiety over an increased pace of ballistic missile tests by North Korea. "A nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies and partners is unacceptable and will result in the end of whatever regime were to take such an action," Biden said during afternoon Rose Garden news conference with Yoon. COVID deaths down 95 percent this year: WHO -- Agence France-Presse

GENEVA - The World Health Organization said Wednesday that Covid-19 deaths had dropped by 95 percent since the start of the year -- but warned the virus was still on the move. WHO said Covid-19 was here to stay and countries would have to learn how to manage its ongoing non-emergency effects, including post-Covid-19 condition, or Long Covid. "We're very encouraged by the sustained decline in reported deaths from Covid-19, which have dropped 95 percent since the beginning of this year," WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a press conference. "However, some countries are seeing increases, and over the past four weeks, 14,000 people lost their lives to this disease. "And, as the emergence of the new XBB.1.16 variant illustrates, the virus is still changing, and is still capable of causing new waves of disease and death." Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO's technical lead on Covid-19, said XBB sub-lineages were now dominant worldwide. They have an inc

Fighting mars Sudan's shaky truce as ex-regime members flee prison Agence France-Presse

KHARTOUM, Sudan -- A Sudanese war crimes suspect has escaped jail amid heavy battles that have rocked the country, along with other members of the Islamist regime ousted in 2019, heightening fears for a fragile ceasefire amid new clashes Wednesday. According to the Department of Health, the new COVID-19 variant has the ability to evade immun

Sudan's warring rivals agree 72-hour ceasefire --- ABS-CBN News

KHARTOUM, Sudan — A US-brokered 72-hour ceasefire between Sudan's warring generals officially came into effect Tuesday after 10 days of urban combat killed hundreds, wounded thousands and sparked a mass exodus of foreigners. FIGHT FOR A GENUINE INDEPENDENT FOREIGN POLICY & NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AGAINST IMPERIALIST AGGRESSION AND INTER-IMPERIALIST CONFLICTS IN TAIWAN, THE PHILIPPINES, & ELSEWHERE--LFS

League of Filipino Students The League of Filipino Students stands in solidarity with the Taiwanese people in resisting US intervention and Chinese militarism, and in fighting for a peaceful resolution to their conflict with China. An inter-imperialist war, which will only serve the interests of both the US and China and cause immense suffering to the people of Taiwan and the Asia-Pacific, must be avoided at all costs. Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian’s statement about “Taiwan Independence,” Filipino OFWs, and US military presence in the Philippines is flawed. While it is true that the rising tensions in the Asia-Pacifc are in large part due to US military provocations, the Filipino people are not laboring under a dilemma between the US and China. The choice is clear from the start: we stand for national sovereignty and a genuine independent foreign policy. China’s military expansion in the Asia-Pacific region, which violates the national sovereignty of much smaller nations s

International Workers’ Memorial Day 2023: Organise for safe and healthy workplaces

On International Workers’ Memorial Day, 28 April, trade unions are promoting the role that organising plays in making workplaces safer and healthier as we remember all working people who have lost their lives to workplace accidents and disease. Workers’ unions are planning to use the new ILO fundamental right to a safe and healthy working environment to tackle the shocking death toll of three million workers who die each year because of their work, with tens of millions more suffering life-changing injuries and ill health. Trade unions will use organising to ensure that the new fundamental right is put into practice and makes a positive difference to the daily lives of working people. The two ILO Conventions (155 and 187) provide backing for union organising, through the creation of workplace safety committees with worker representation, and worker safety representatives in workplaces. This organising can improve the working environment through the right to refuse dangerous wor

The President also did not disclose who will replace the former broadcaster as DSWD Secretary.

Traveling abroad? Here’s how to register at the eTravel System platform By Catalina Ricci S. Madarang -

DOH not keen on requiring people to wear masks vs COVID-19 again --- Gaea Katreena Cabico - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health on Tuesday said it is not considering the return of face mask rules even as COVID-19 cases continue to increase. Senior high graduates not job-ready? Senator points out government’s own lapses in hiring Cristina Chi - Philstar.com

Walter Bollozos MANILA, Philippines — Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian said Tuesday that the government itself is defeating the purpose of the K to 12 law as it continues to lump together senior high school students with graduates of the old high school curriculum in its job hiring process. At a joint Senate hearing led by the basic education committee, which Gatchalian chairs, the lawmaker questioned a representative from the Civil Service Commission (CSC) over the qualifications it requires in entry-level government positions, which accepts both graduates of senior high school and the 10-year high school curriculum. “Government is the one that is not accepting senior high school students. And this is actually the most unfair practice being done by the government. Because government mandated senior high school, they promised them employment, but (they are) not even hiring senior high students,” Gatchalian said. “Government itself is the greatest violator of the K to 12 law,” Gatchalian adde

High cost, stigma top reasons for not receiving mental health care in Philippines — Harvard study Gaea Katreena Cabico - Philstar.com

MANILA, Philippines — The high cost of treatment and services, and stigma are hindering Filipinos from seeking mental health care, a study of Harvard University’s humanitarian research center showed. Filipinos in Taiwan well-protected – MECO Pia Lee-Brago - The Philippine Star

The former labor secretary said there are around 200,000 OFWs in Taiwan. “I would be the first one to tell you in case there is an emergency situation, but right now, no tension. Taiwan is very normal. All our Filipino community members are prepared for any exigency,” Bello said. The Chinese embassy in Manila said Ambassador Huang Xilian’s remarks about OFWs in Taiwan were mi
