5 Filipinos apprehended by US immigration

The Philippine consulate has verified that between June 7 to 14, five Filipinos had been apprehended by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Two were part of a 3-day operation that swept up 162 people, most of which ICE has described as criminal aliens.  While details of the arrests remain limited, the Pilipino Workers Center (PWC) has been monitoring some of the cases and has been in contact with one of the detainees.  “Our members have reported that one caregiver in Covina was also arrested and then the other one in Panorama City was also arrested in front of his house while he’s going to his car,” said PWC's Lolit Andrada Lledo. US to downgrade Malaysia in annual human trafficking report – report

Malaysia will be downgraded back to Tier 2 Watch List, a category denoting nations that deserve special scrutiny, in the State Department's closely watched Trafficking in Persons (TIP) report, the source said, declining to be identified as the report is not yet public. The source said while Malaysia had made good progress on combating human trafficking, it had not been able to meet all its promises. The source did not provide details. Taiwan to extend visa-free access period for Pinoys

Published  June 28, 2018 10:42am  Taiwan will extend the trial period of visa-free privileges to Filipinos for another year, a local media report said, citing Minister without Portfolio Chang Ching-sen. According to a  report on Focus Taiwan , the extension is also extended to two other Southeast Asian nations, namely Thailand and Brunei. Chang was quoted as saying that the decision to extend the trial period was reached during an inter-ministerial meeting earlier this month. At present, Filipinos can stay in Taiwan without visa for up to 14 days. The visa-free trial program for the Philippines started on November 1 last year. With the extension, it will now run through July 31, 2019. Chang said that in order to better manage the program, visitors from the three countries will be granted visa-free stays of no more than 14 days. Currently, Thai and Brunei citizens are allowed to stay in Taiwan for a maximum 30 days on visa free entry. — KBK, GMA News

Saudi Arabia hiring 1,000 Filipino nurses

According to a report by JP Soriano on 24 Oras on Wednesday, interested applicants may submit their applications to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), which will process them free of charge. Requirements include a Board or PRC license and two years of experience as a nurse. Benefits include a paid annual vacation leave, free round trip plane tickets to the Philippines, and free food and housing. Those who are hired will have an starting wage of more than 4,000 riyal, or more than P58,000. Their income may increase up to P90,000. DFA urges Pinoys in California wildfire path to flee

ABS-CBN News Posted at  Jun 27 2018 07:34 AM Save Facebook Twitter GPlus LinkedIn MANILA - The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Wednesday urged Filipinos in northern California to heed the call of local authorities to evacuate their homes amid a dangerous wildfire in their vicinity.  The DFA said it was closely monitoring the blaze in Lake County, which is home to 1,700 Filipinos and located 178 kilometers from the state capital of Sacramento.  "The Philippine Consulate General in San Francisco is advising members of the Filipino community in Lake County to heed evacuation orders after California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency in the affected area," the agency said in a statement.  The DFA said it has not received any report so far of Filipinos affected by the fire that broke out Saturday evening and razed 11,500 acres of land.  Filipinos who may require assistance are advised to get in touch with the Consulate at:

DepEd forms panel to look into purchase of razors worth nearly P2,000 per piece

The razors, which cost nearly P2,000 a piece according to other media reports, were part of school materials needed for the region's senior high classes. In a statement, DepEd said the razors were bought between April to June 2016 and are to be used for the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) track in senior high. "Based on preliminary reports, payment for the items has not been made since the supplier did not comply with the specifications. The incident appears to have occurred prior to the term of the present administration," the statement read.
