CHR hopes solidarity for slain OFW will benefit Pinoys in Slovakia

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) on Wednesday expressed sadness over the killing of Filipino Henry John Acorda in Slovakia, saying it is hoping the solidarity caused by his death "will help improve the situation of all Filipinos" in the European nation.
Acorda, 36, was beaten up by a man believed to be a neo-Nazi in Bratislava for defending a Filipina friend last May 26. He died at the University Hospital Ruzjnov due to injuries on May 31.
A 28-year-old suspect identified only as Juraj H is currently in detention and facing manslaughter charges. If found guilty, he could face up to 12 years in prison.
Police have neither confirmed nor denied that the attack was racially motivated.
In a statement, CHR said it "is deeply saddened by the brutal and tragic death of OFW Henry John Acorda. We express our condolences and send our prayers to his family and friends."
It pointed that Acorda's "courage and sacrifice is not in vain as thousands of young Slovaks have built upon his heroism and found their voice reviving and deepening discussions against violence and extremism in Slovakia."
"We hope that this will help improve the situation of all Filipinos in Slovakia and prevent similar tragedies from happening again," the CHR said.
The Philippine government has already extended necessary assistance to Acorda's family. His remains are expected to be repatriated within the week. —KBK, GMA News
