VISTA, California - A member of the US Marines was convicted to 51 years to life in prison Friday for killing a Filipino Army reservist here in December 2012.
US Army reservist Alvin Bulaoro had gone missing after he met with US Marine Kevin Coset. A few weeks later, Bulaoro was found dead inside his car.
Records of Bulaoro's credit card transactions and a surveillance video led investigators to cite Coset as a suspect in the murder case.
Investigators found Coset's journal where he confessed to killing Bulaoro with a gun and a knife.
Through a half a decade’s worth of court proceedings, Coset kept hiring and firing lawyers as he shuffled in and out of mental institutes.
Coset eventually represented himself and pleaded guilty.
The plea deal made prosecutors drop enhancement charges, but Coset is now asking the court to dismiss the past half decade’s worth of proceedings.
Bulaoro's family, who originated from the Visayas, were thankful for the support they have received from prosecutors and other family members in the Philippines.
"We’re hoping that the appeal will be denied by the superior court. We’re hoping that justice will finally be served," said Sweet Jean Pacrim, Bulaoro's cousin.
The Bulaoro family now runs a home health clinic named after Alvin that serves as a tribute to his kindness, compassion and hard work.
