Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana on Monday said there is "nothing unusual" over the landing of a Chinese military transport aircraft in Davao City last week, adding it did not skirt any process as it had a prior coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines.
The Chinese military transport aircraft Ilyushin Il-76 made a brief stopover at Davao City International Airport last June 8 for refueling purposes as it was on its way back to China from Australia, said Lorenzana.
The Defense chief, however, admitted that he was informed only "after" the aircraft had already landed in Davao.
"Nalaman ko lang after the fact, pero ang explanation ng gobyerno, ng ating pamahalaan ay meron itong coordination with CAAP. Alam niyo yung CAAP is the agency in charge with our air space, so meron silang coordination na mag-landing sa Davao para mag-refuel the papunta siya sa Cairns, Australia," Lorenzana said.
"Pagbalik niya magre-refuel din ulit, ganon ang kasunduan so nothing unusual there. Kahit na yung ibang mga bansa, ginagawa din 'yan, yung Amerikano, naglalanding din dito para mag-refuel," he added.

"The landing was requested for the specific purpose of refuelling and was granted and given with specific conditions for compliance by the requesting party," he said in a statement.
Go said technical stops of foreign government and commercial planes such as for purposes of refueling are coordinated closely by concerned agencies of the Philippine government following established domestic procedure and considering existing agreements.
"The same courtesy is extended to Philippine government aircrafts when technical stops need to be undertaken," Go said.
"The Department of National Defense, Department of Foreign Affairs and Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines—and other relevant agencies—work together to ensure that requesting parties comply with our domestic procedures and requirements," he added. — RSJ, GMA News
