DOLE to nurses: Explore alternative healthcare careers

ABS-CBNnews.com MANILA, Philippines – Newly licensed nurses must not be discouraged when they do not immediately get a job in hospitals or medical institutions in the country, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said on Monday. “We should be realistic about the global employment market. There are jobs aplenty if you just explore other careers in the healthcare industry,” said DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz. Baldoz cited the growing trend in the healthcare information management outsourcing industry that provides alternatives for those seeking careers in the healthcare industry. “Healthcare careers now expand into various disciplines which open huge career opportunities for nursing graduates and allied medical professionals,” she said. Healthcare outsourcing jobs, according to the Bureau of Local Employment (BLE), offer starting pays ranging from P14,000 – P18,000; while clinical appeals specialists employed in the BPO industry receive basic pay of P20,000-P40,000...

Mothers, children flee Myanmar on desperate voyage

Khao Lak, Thailand - Homeless, hungry and nine months pregnant, Nuru boarded a rickety boat filled with Rohingya asylum seekers fleeing a wave of deadly sectarian violence in western Myanmar.   Six days later she gave birth at sea, far from any hospitals or doctors.   Since Buddhist-Muslim tensions exploded last June in Myanmar's Rakhine State, thousands of Rohingya boat people -- including a growing number of women and children -- have joined an exodus from the former junta-ruled country.   Those who arrived in neighboring Thailand have been "helped on" by the Thai navy towards Malaysia further south or detained as illegal immigrants.   Hundreds are feared to have drowned along the way while others were rescued as far away as Sri Lanka.   Denied citizenship by Myanmar, where they have suffered decades of discrimination and persecution, they left behind a country where they were never wanted -- only to find they are unwelcome elsewhere. ...

10-year-old Fil-Am girl leads New York hockey team to victory

Ten-year-old Rosalyn de Castro led her hockey team to the championship of the Hudson Valley Hockey League, as the captain — and goalie — of the all-boys NYC Skyliners. Rosalyn, a fifth grader at St. Adalbert School, helped the team win its first playoff game with a shutout, usually credited to a goalie’s effective defense. Her mom Janice Guevarra Javier said Rosalyn didn’t let in one goal, winning 2-0 for the team. “This is the fourth shutout for her this season,” Janice told The FilAm. Rosalyn got interested in the sport after listening to stories of great moments in hockey history from her dad, goalie Jonathan de Castro, a sought-after coach in the New York Tri-State, who began playing as a goaltender at 2 years old. Rosalyn started playing house league with other kids in school and the neighborhood who played in the same rink day in and day out. Throughout her growth, said Janice, “she has excelled enough to keep up and gain respect throughout the boys teams.” “There aren’t many gir...

Amnesty International

Amnesty International Opinion Mabel Au, Director,  Amnesty International Hong Kong February 25, 2013 Scaremongering seems to be obscuring the facts in the furor over the case of Evangeline Vallejos, the Filipino domestic worker seeking the right to apply for permanent residency. With the Court of Final Appeal due to consider her case this week, conspicuously absent in this  emotive public debate is any meaningful discussion of the widespread exploitation and discrimination migrant domestic workers face on a daily basis. It is unlikely Hong Kong would be the economic powerhouse it is today without the army of 300,000 migrant domestic workers. The truth is, they are the backbone of our society, liberating tens of thousands of Hong Kong women to enter the labour market and advance our wealth. Hong Kong can implement robust immigration controls but when it comes to the right to abode, international laws that the government has signed up to are clear: restrictions...

ADVISORY: FILIPINO NURSES & HEALTHCARE WORKERS SHOULD BE WARY OF ADVERTISEMENTS & CONSULTANCY FIRMS THAT PEDDLE MISLEADING INFORMATION ABOUT NURSING JOBS IN NORWAY

Image
Published on   31 January, 2013 - 10:57 The Philippine Embassy in Oslo wishes to warn Filipino nurses and healthcare workers about misleading information currently circulating online and peddled by a growing number of “consultancy” firms about the supposed abundance and ease of finding nursing and other healthcare jobs in Norway. Said consultancy firms make these unsuspecting Filipinos believe that getting a nursing or healthcare job in Norway is easy, advertising misleading information such as “NO IELTS and/or PRC License needed” among other gimmicks, when in truth, it is not easy to find work as a foreign nurse or healthcare worker in Norway. While it is true that IELTS is not required by most health care employers in Norway, this is only because English is not the primary language used by the country and its healthcare sector. Instead, foreign nurses and healthcare practitioners wishing to work in Norway have to pass a different and much harder Norwegian lan...

Beware of emails offering nursing jobs -- POEA

After offering Filipino medical workers non-existent jobs in Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, and United Stated of America, swindlers are now luring them to “work” in Singapore. Administrator Hans Leo J. Cacdac said Mr. Tan Zhiyi, the Human Resource Division of Singapore General Hospital has alerted him of numerous inquiries they received from Filipino workers asking about the authenticity of the job offers sent through email addresses singaporegenhosp@zoho.com, singaporegeneralhosp @ojooo.com and singaporegenhosp@hush.com. Cacdac said Mr. Tan has denied the emails came from them, adding that their official emails use the internet address sgh.com.sg. The target victims were required to pay PhP3,800 for visa interview preparation fee through a bank account, which Mr. Tan claimed was not owned by the hospital. Typical of other fake e-mails, the sender assures the worker of nonpayment of placement and processing fees, and free accommodation and food allowance, but they have ...
