NEARLY nine out of 10 Filipinos believe that they feel safe within their communities, while seven out of 10 said that they feel safe in their own homes, according to a survey conducted by OCTA Research. In its First quarter Tugon ng Masa survey from March 24-28, 91 percent of residents from the National Capital Region (NCR) and Balanced Luzon felt that they were safe in their neighborhoods. Among socioeconomic classes, Class ABC and Class D also had the highest percentages among those who believe that they are safe in their communities with 92 percent and 90 percent respectively. On the question on whether they feel safe in their own homes, only 71 percent of respondents nationwide felt that they were safe in their own homes, while 10 percent said that they do not feel safe. MANILA, Philippines — Thousands of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) gathered yesterday in Sanchong Metropolitan Park in Taiwan to celebrate the Philippines’ 125th Independence Day. The Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) organized the event attended by over 7,000 OFWs from various parts of Taiwan. “This is the first time in three years that OFWs in Taiwan gathered to express their unity in helping the government move our nation forward,” MECO chairman Silvestre Bello III said. “This is also our way of saying how grateful our government is to OFWs for their contribution in keeping our economy afloat,” Bello added. The OFWs joined the fun run and cheered as raffle numbers were drawn for cash prizes and round trip plane tickets to the Philippines. China navy ship enters Japan waters near Kagoshima Pref. islands Kyodo News

TOKYO — A Chinese navy survey ship on Thursday entered Japan's territorial waters near islands in the southwestern prefecture of Kagoshima, the latest sighting of such a vessel in the area since February this year, the Defense Ministry said. The vessel was spotted crossing into Japanese waters southwest of Yakushima Island at around 10:00 a.m., the ministry said. The latest case marked the eighth entry by a Chinese survey ship into waters off Kagoshima since November 2021. Japan has protested to China and conveyed its strong concern over the latest intrusion through diplomatic channels, the ministry said. The vessel was confirmed to have left Japanese territorial waters west of Kuchinoerabu Island and headed toward the East China Sea at around 1 p.m., according to the ministry. TOKYO - Japan's Cabinet on Friday approved a plan to expand the scope of industries covered by the blue-collar skilled worker visa that creates a path to permanent residency for foreigners, in a major shift in the country's restrictive immigration policy. Raising the number of industries to 11 from the current two, the government seeks to start holding language and skill examinations targeting applicants in the newly added sectors from around this fall after soliciting public opinion. "It is important to promote smooth acceptance of human resources. To address the severe labor shortage, Japan will expand the (visa's) scope," Prime Minister Fumio Kishida told a meeting of relevant ministers. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Friday said it would now impose a one-strike policy against recruitment agencies of land-based overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) that committed a violation.
