FORT WASHINGTON, MARYLAND - Ellen Leuterio, the Filipina teacher killed in a road accident on a lonely Maryland back-road last August 28, is finally going home. (See previous story: Newly-arrived Filipina teacher dies in Maryland car crash)
Her remains is set to arrive in Manila Saturday from Baltimore.
The response from the Filipino American community for support to send her remains home was described as "overwhelming".
Grace Valera-Jaramillo, Migrant Heritage Commission executive director, disclosed they raised over $7,000 in just three days. Enough to cover Ellen’s funeral and repatriation expenses with about a thousand dollars to spare which would be given to Leuterio’s family.
George Kalas, owner of the funeral parlor, was so touched by the outpouring of help for a virtual stranger that he agreed to charge services "at cost".
The Philippine Embassy also took receipt of papers proving Leuterio paid her dues to Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, raising hopes her family can collect death benefits in Manila.
Ellen arrived in the US last August 15.
She worked just four days at the High Bridge Elementary School in Bowie, Maryland before dying in a car collision due to internal injuries. RODNEY J. JALECO, ABS-CBN North America News Bureau- ABS-CBN News
