RP consulate in Dubai loses P1.5 million to thieves
At least 100,000 dirhams or about P1.5 million in cash and checks went missing from the vault of the Philippine consulate in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, ABS-CBN Middle East News Bureau reported Sunday.
Bureau chief Dindo Amparo said in his report that the consulate's officials suspect that the theft took place Friday night while employees were on their day-off.
Employees who were staying in at the building discovered the theft at dawn Saturday.
Officials said that the thieves gained entry into the vault through the finance officer's room.
The thieves left the room open after taking off with the money and checks paid by Filipino workers and expatriates for services such as passport renewal, issuance of certificates and others.
Dubai police are now investigating the incident.
