The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is investigating the death of a Filipina domestic helper who allegedly committed suicide in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

“Our Embassy in Abu Dhabi is working with the local police to determine the circumstances surrounding Ms. Alona Bagayan's death,” DFA spokesman Raul Hernandez told GMA News Online via text on Wednesday.

“The repatriation process will start as soon as the police investigation has been concluded,” Hernandez continued.

Bagayan's family members sought help from Akbayan Representative Walden Bello to find out the truth behind her death.

The family was informed on February 15 that Bagayan died due to suicide on February 5.

However, her family believes that Bagayan could not have committed suicide.

“The details surrounding Alona’s employment is sketchy at best, and it is our duty to ensure that the truth regarding Alona’s death is revealed to give her family peace and justice,” Bello said.

The family also fears that Bagayan might have been a victim of human trafficking as she only received her documents including her passport and contract at the airport before she left the country on January 30 this year.

Before her flight, she called her brother to inform him that her visa mysteriously expires the same day.- VVP, GMA News
