PHL Consul General Mario de Leon Jr. named one of 'San Beda's Best' for 2013

Cheers to Consul General Mario Lopez de Leon, Jr., who will be honored by the San Beda College Alumni Association with a Distinguished Bedan Award in Government Service on Feb. 12 at the NBC Tent in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

The “Talinong Bedista” (A Salute to San Beda’s Best 2013) will also recognize other Bedans who have excelled in their respective fields and brought honor and pride to their alma mater.

Amb. de Leon spent his grade school years (Gr. 1-7) at San Beda from 1959 to 1966.

Joining him in the roster of this year’s awardees are Court of Appeals Associate Justice Jose Reyes, National Bureau of Investigation Director Nonnatus Caesar Rojas, ABS-CBN chief executive officer Charo Santos-Concio, veteran singer Hajji Alejandro, and New York-based artist Jorge Ortoll and real estate broker Edwin Josue.

Due to his prior commitments and pending work, Amb. de Leon won’t be able to fly to Manila to attend the star-studded ceremony.

But his daughter, Khristine Mae, will accept the honor on her father’s behalf, according to Philippine Consulate staffer Lulu Villamater.

Prior to his New York posting in March 2011, Amb. de Leon was Philippine ambassador to South Africa.

He finished college with a bachelor of arts degree in social psychology (honorable mention) from the Ateneo de Manila University, where he also graduated in high school.

He also attended the Ateneo School of Business for his MBA.

He is married to the warm and vibrant Eleanor de Leon.

They are blessed with four lovely daughters: Ana Karisma, Anna Korinna, Khristine Mae and Joyce Kathleen, and an only son, Josef Kriyan, who passed away in 2006.

Amb. de Leon, who has held numerous important foreign service positions, previously served as New York consul from 1993 to 1997, and third secretary, and later second secretary at the Philippine Mission to the United Nations from 1990 to 1993. Filipino Reporter
