Pinay maid dies after falling from 10th floor of Lebanon apartment
A Filipina domestic worker in Lebanon was found dead in an apparent accident after she fell from the apartment she was working in but her family members claim there was foul play involved in the incident.
Julius Segovia on Friday on GMA’s “Saksi” reported on the death of Criselda Canonigo. According to her mother, Lourdes, a report from the Department of Foreign Affairs noted the details of Canonigo’s death.
In the report, Canonigo’s Filipina co-worker saw her in the balcony of the home the victim worked in, where the co-worker tried to rescue Canonigo, who was about to jump. However, the co-worker’s grip wasn’t enough to rescue Canonigo because of the victim’s weight, resulting in her falling from the 10th floor of the building.
However, Canonigo’s family doubted the details provided by her co-worker, citing pictures of the crime scene they were able to see from social networking site Facebook.
“Makikita naman po sa ebidensya. 10th floor, hindi ka nabasag? At balak po naming ipa-autopsy iyong kapatid ko para malaman kung ano ang totoong nangyari,” said Canonigo’s sister, Maricel.
“Hindi po kami naniniwala na nagpakamatay ang kapatid ko kasi hindi po ganoong kahina ‘yun,” she also said.
Furthermore, Canonigo’s family mentioned that the last time they talked to her on February 4, she was crying over the treatment of her female Lebanese employer.
Maricel noted various instances where Canonigo was being abused by her employer. The woman had apparently screamed at Canonigo, hurled figurines at her, and plunged her face in the toilet.
Canonigo went to Lebanon in May last year to try to secure a better future for her family. She has three children.
According to the report, her recruitment agency based in Lebanon has already pledged to cover the expenses in bringing back Canonigo’s body back to the Philippines, as well as to give other benefits.
The DFA also said the Philippines embassy in Lebanon is already coordinating with authorities there over the incident. - Gian C. Geronimo, VVP, GMA News
