Australian cops arrest teen suspect in Pinay's rape-slay case

Australian authorities arrested a 17-year-old suspect in the murder and possible rape of Filipino-Australian Joan Canino Ryther whose body was found on May 21 this year.

Joan's sister Mardelita Allera said Cory Ryther, the victim's husband, called her about the arrest, according to a report from Balitanghali's Jun Veneracion on Saturday.

Allera also said other sources have confirmed the news.

“Nakausap ko rin po yung kaibigan ni Joan doon na may asawa pong detective at ang sabi niya, yun nga rin po pinaalam sa amin na nahuli na rin po raw yung pumatay,” she said.

No other information was made available as police authorities are still mum about the case.

About 40 investigators were assigned to solve the case, an earlier report said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that Philippine officials are doing their best to help with the investigation.

“Our embassy in Canberra and Honorary consul in Brisbane continue to coordinate with Australian authorities with regard to the status of the investigation,” DFA Spokesman Raul Hernandez told GMA News Online via text on Saturday.

Hernandez added that the DFA is “ready to provide the appropriate assistance in the repatriation of Ms. Ryther's remains.”

The half-naked body of Joan was found on a lot near her usual way to work which appeared to have been hit in the head with a blunt object.

She was 27 years old and also two months pregnant when she died. Her husband Cory vowed that justice will be served for his wife and unborn child.

“I promise that my wife will never be forgotten. Her case will not go unsolved. For as long as I live it will not go unsolved.” he said. Andrei Medina, VVP, GMA News
