PHL pushes for protection of migrant workers at global forum
The Philippines made another global pitch for the continued protection of migrant workers at a recent international forum, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Monday.
DFA Undersecretary Jesus Yabes made the pitch to Sweden's Ambassador Eva Akerman Borje at a side meeting of the Global Forum on Migration and Development on May 21.
"Yabes encouraged Sweden to lead the GFMD in encouraging countries of destinations to be more engaged on the issues of migrants protection," the DFA said in a news release.
It added Yabes “emphasized that migrants protection is a shared responsibility of both the sending and destination countries.”
Sweden currently chairs the GFMD until June 2014, and will host the GFMD Summit in May 2014 in Stockholm.
The DFA noted that the GFMD is the largest government-led multilateral voluntary process tackling the issues and concerns on migration and development.
