Pinoys in HK urged to take precautions vs. avian flu

Filipinos in Hong Kong have been advised to take precautions against avian flu, after the first case of bird flu H7N9 was reported there.

In an advisory Tuesday, the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong urged Filipinos to wash their hands and to cover their noses when coughing or sneezing.

“Ugaliing parating maghugas ng kamay lalo na pagkagaling sa banyo, ospital o tahanan ng mga inaalagaan, bago kumain, pagkatapos umubo o bumahin, at kapag humawak sa mga nabahiran ng bodily fluids, mga pampublikong kagamitan, o mga hayop,” it said.

It also said the public may go to the website of the Hong Kong Centre for Health Protection for more information regarding the avian flu.

The consulate general also urged Filipinos to use liquid soap, wash their fingers thoroughly, and dry their hands properly afterward. If the hands are not dirtied, they can also be washed with 70 to 80-percent alcohol in 20 seconds.

The consulate general also advised against holding the mouth, eyes and nose.

“Huwag dumura. Balutin ang mga lumabas sa ilong o bibig ng papel na tisiyu at itapon ito sa may takip na basurahan,” it added.

The consulate general likewise encouraged wearing a surgical mask in crowded or poorly ventilated areas, or in hospitals and clinics.

Wearing such a mask is also encouraged if one has symptoms of respiratory ailments.

Meanwhile, the consulate general discouraged people against reporting for work or school if they have flu-like symptoms.

The tips stemmed from reports that Hong Kong authorities had confirmed a 36-year-old helper is in critical condition due to avian influenza A(H7N9)— KBK, GMA News
