Scalded OFW in Saudi files case against employer – DFA

The female Filipino domestic helper who was scalded by her employer in Saudi Arabia has formally filed charges before Saudi authorities, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Thursday.

Victim Pahima Alagasi Palacasi, 23, who arrived in Riyadh in March, was accompanied by Philippine Embassy representatives on May 20 to a police station where she filed her complaint.

“The police have subsequently issued an endorsement to a hospital in Riyadh for the conduct of medical examination,” DFA spokesman Charles Jose said.

A medical report to be issued by the hospital will be used by the police for its investigation, Jose said, adding the case was also brought to the attention of Saudi’s Minstry of Foreign Affairs by the Philippine government.

“The Philippine government will give her whatever assistance she may require,” Jose said.

Saudi Arabia is the top destination of job-seeking Filipinos in the Middle East, with a least 1 million workers mostly employed in the household service and construction sectors.

There have been numerous reports in the past of abuses being committed against Filipino workers in the Kingdom.

The Labor Department placed the recruitment agency that brought Palacassi to her employer under "documentary suspension," putting on hold its deployment of Filipino workers abroad. — Michaela del Callar/RSJ, GMA News
