MANILA, Philippines - A 90-year-old "lola" is eager to cast her vote in the Philippine elections, even though she's in Italy.
Remedios Reyes registered as an overseas voter during the Philippine Consulate General's mobile consular outreach in Turin last May 18.
"Nanay" Remedios, who was born in Malate, Manila in December 1924, was accompanied by her granddaughter Myra Joyce Reyes.
She had worked as a seamstress in Pasay, then opened a carinderia and magazine shop. In the 1980s, her grandchildren brought her to Austria, and later Turin.
Asked about Nanay’s secret to long life, Myra Joyce said her grandmother was active in church and social clubs and is a fervent devotee of the Nazarene.
She also joked Nanay's love for bagoong and pork may have helped as well.
Remedios has six grandchildren, five great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, the youngest of whom is two months old.
The Philippine Consulate registered 56 new voters in Turin, bringing the total number of registered and revalidated voters to 255 since the start of overseas voters registration on May 6.
