US embassy closed on Monday to mark Memorial Day

The United States Embassy in Manila will be closed on Monday to mark Memorial Day, a federal holiday in the US.

In an announcement on its social media accounts, the embassy said it will resume regular services on Tuesday, May 27.

"Memorial Day is an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May and honors the men and women who lost their lives while serving in the U.S. military. This holiday was originally known as Decoration Day. It originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971," it said.

The Philippine embassy in Washington D.C. earlier this week said it will also be closed on May 26 to mark Memorial Day.

The USA.gov website said highlights of the holiday include "memorials to the brave people who defended freedom and liberty" of the US. —NB, GMA News
