Pinay nanny granted scholarship in Canada to get healthcare assistant degree

Once featured by CBC News Canada for her daughter's uplifting tale of survival, Filipina nanny Nenita Yap was awarded a scholarship to become a full-fledged healthcare assistant in the North American territory.

Sprott Shaw College, a 104-year-old college in British Columbia, granted Yap a scholarship after they picked her essay for Health Care Assistant diploma program.

report on Asian Pacific Post said Yap's essay explained her family's situation and how the scholarship could help her improve it.

Yap told Global News last June 30 that 10 of her family members, including her sister and mother, died during the onslaught of Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013. Her 13-year-old daughter survived by clinging on a metal fence during the super typhoon that killed at least 6,300 people.

"I am determined to elevate my current situation by improving my education… financially speaking I am not able to achieve that goal immediately because there are other financial priorities that need to be taken care of first,” Yap told Global News.

Asian Pacific News said Yap's daughter and 16-year-old niece, who is an orphan, hope to join her in Canada.

In their announcement, Sprott Shaw College, noting its "long history with the Philippines," said it is planning to turn the granting of scholarship into an annual event to "both domestic and international Philippine students." —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
