Filipinos in Israel were asked to exercise vigilance and precaution amid heightened tensions in the Gaza Strip, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Thursday.

A DFA statement said no Filipino was reported injured or killed in the three-day air raids by Israel on Gaza and in the retaliatory rocket strikes against Israel by Hamas militants.

The most recent violence was triggered by the abduction and killings of three Jewish students in the Palestine-occupied West Bank nearly a month ago. Then last week, a Palestinian teen-ager believed to be kidnapped was found dead, his burnt body found in a Jerusalem forest.

At least 100 Filipinos married to Palestinians reside in Gaza, according to 2012 figures released by the DFA, while around 40,000 are working mostly as caregivers in Israel.

The resumption of conflict – the most violent encounter to erupt in two years – prompted the Philippine Embassy in Tel Aviv to issue an emergency advisory for Filipinos on July 8.

In its security warning, the Filipino community in Israel were told “to avoid crowded places which may be possible targets of attacks, and to heed the safety advisories issued by local and national Israeli authorities.”

For concerns and emergencies, Filipinos can contact the embassy’s emergency hotline number at 054-466-1188, the DFA said.

Manila said it will continue to closely monitor the security situation in Israel. Michaela del Callar/KBK, GMA News
