Films about OFWs featured in HK film festival

Films about overseas Filipino workers, including the critically-acclaimed “Anak,” were featured in the recently held 5th Philippine Film Festival in Hong Kong.

“Anak,” which was released in 2000 and stars now Batangas governor Vilma Santos, was the centerpiece of the well attended opening night on November 14, a news release from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

The movie told the story of OFW Josie, who worked in Hong Kong for years only to come home to her resentful children.

Other films that were featured were “Milan,” “Caregiver,” “Balikbayan Box” and “Purok 7.”

The festival, held from November 16 to 23, is an annual activity by the Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong and organized with the Film Development Council of the Philippines.


Filipino films have been known to highlight film festivals around the world.

Recently, the documentary "TNT" was featured in the International Film Festival Manhattan 2014while the crowd-funded "Singkil" made its debut in the Frameline Film Festival last June. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News

STAR / Michael Varcas MANILA, Philippines — While Chinese vessels in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) have decreased in number, they have maintained a presence in three key land features where naval and coast guard ships have intensified operations in the past seven days, according to the Philippine Navy. Latest monitoring by the Philippine Navy showed armed ships of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) maintaining a menacing presence around the grounded BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal, Panatag Shoal and Escoda Shoal. MANILA, Philippines — The Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) sees social media as the main reason for the rising number of Filipinos marrying or becoming partners of foreign nationals. In 2022, the CFO recorded 6,854 marriages or partnerships with foreign nationals, a 40.1 percent increase from the 4,891 “intermarriages” recorded in 2021. “First of all, what we see in the increase in the marriage rate of Filipinos or Filipinos with foreign partners is because of social media, (that) is number one; matchings; letters, introduction of their friends,” CFO chairperson Romulo Arugay said at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing yesterday.
