Two Filipino sailors presumed dead, two survive capsizing of ship off Scotland
Two Filipino crewmembers of a trawler from Scotland were presumed dead while two others were hospitalized after their trawler "Ocean Way" sank off the coast of Northumberland in the United Kingdom.
The Daily Record reported on Monday that the search for the 38-year-old and 32-year-old Filipino males lost at sea was called off by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) after a full day of searching.
Meanwhile, the two Filipino survivors, aged 38 and 28, were flown to Wansbeck Hospital in Northumberland to be treated for hypothermia, but was subsequently released after treatment.
Their Scottish skipper, James Noble, died while being airlifted with the two Filipino survivors.
Express.co.uk wrote that the four Filipinos were in their bunks when their trawler "hit an object and was holed off Northumberland on Sunday morning."
A lifebelt served to keep the two surviving Filipinos afloat with Noble, while a crewmember was believed to have been trapped inside the hull of the boat while another possibly drowned after jumping into the sea.
STV quoted Scotland fisheries minister Richared Lochhead giving his condolences, saying the tragedy "will be felt by all fishing communities and is a horrible reminder of the dangers our fishermen face day in day out."
