Another Fil-Am passes 'The Voice' with Leona Lewis cover
Another Filipino-American talent wowed judges at the 12th season of the hit reality singing competition "The Voice."
Just one week after Anatalia Villaranda turned all four judges around with her rendition of Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby," Gaby Borromeo's voice convinced judges Blake Shelton and Adam Levine to watch her sing.
Her version of Leona Lewis "Happy" started slow and made use of her natural, almost gravelly voice, but built to a booming chorus that convinced the country singer and Maroon 5 frontman to turn their chairs around.
While judges Alicia Keys and Gwen Stefani did not turn their chairs, both admired Borromeo's journey as a performer and her "gorgeous voice."
Though Shelton praised her demeanor and the escalation in her performance, Borromeo chose Levine, who ran to her post-song to give her a hug and his congratulations, as her coach.
Villaranda, on the other hand, picked Keys to be her mentor.
Borromeo's blind audition as of Friday afternoon was the 14th trending video on YouTube. —Rie
