Pinay, 9 others nabbed in Malaysia over internet love scam
Malaysian authorities arrested a Filipino woman and nine others who were allegedly involved in an online scam that preyed on lonely people who were looking for a relationship, The Star reported on Tuesday.
The Filipina was reportedly part of a group that used fake pictures of good-looking Europeans on social media to lure their victims.
Once victims are hooked, the suspects would claim to send them gifts such as jewelry and cash before posing as Customs officers and courier companies on the phone to ask for payments to release the gifts.
The report, citing a source, said one of the victims paid a total of RM4,000 before she realized that she was duped by the "American" she had made friends with the previous year.
The unnamed Filipina was arrested along with seven Nigerian men and two Malaysian women in separate raids in Malacca and Selangor, the report said.
Seized from them were mobile phones, bank-in slips, SIM cards, modems, and laptops. —Rie Takumi/KBK, GMA News
