Redeployment of displaced OFWs in Taiwan starts - local recruiters

MANILA, Philippines - Local recruitment agencies have started the redeployment process for Filipino workers that have been displaced from their factory jobs in Taiwan due to the effect of the global financial crisis.

The redeployment process is part of the proposals of recruitment agencies to the Philippine Overseas Employment Agencies (POEA) to help workers that were displaced following the closure of several factories in Taiwan.

In a letter to the POEA last December 22, Pilipino Manpower Agencies Accredited to Taiwan (PILMAT) president Jackson Gan said his organization is now taking proactive steps to address effects of the crisis to Taiwan's labor market.

"Among them is the redeployment wherein workers who are terminated in Taiwan have received return tickets and entry visas and are expected to return to their jobsites within six months," Gan said in his letter addressed to POEA administrator Jennifer Manila.

He added that another step is encouraging Filipino workers currently in Taiwan to remain there as factories in need of employees are coordinating with the Manila Economic Cultural Office (MECO) and Philippine Labor Council (PCL).

"These factories are coordinating with MECO and PLC for the smooth transfer of these terminated workers without any cost to them," Gan said.

The PILMAT official said more or less 2,500 Filipino workers have returned back to the country at the onset of financial crisis in Taiwan, with 5,000 more expected to be laid off during the first quarter of this year.

Gan also reported that workers that have returned in the country are now being attended to by members of their organization on the matters of money claims due to the unexpected termination of their three-year contracts.

"Workers who have filed with the POEA for adjudication of their claims are scheduled by the government agency for conciliation talks with the concerned agency," he said. - GMANews.TV
