Singaporean employer charged for maltreating Pinay maid

MANILA, Philippines - An employer in Singapore faces possible jail term of up to three years for allegedly abusing her Filipino maid, an online report said Wednesday.

The Straits Times reported that in September 2008, 38-year-old employer Annie Tan grabbed Filipina worker Vilma Lambino Manuel by the head and banged it against a wall thrice in her home in Bishan.

Tan also reportedly slapped Manuel on the face, causing the maid’s nose to bleed, after which she grabbed the maid’s right arm and kicked her left leg.

Prosecutors charged Tan with four counts of abuse. According to the report, if convicted, the accused could be sentenced to imprisonment of up to three years or a fine up to $7,500 for each charge – which would amount to almost P400,000.

Tan has been ordered to appear before the court once more on June 10. - Kimberly Jane T. Tan, GMANews.TV
