XIAMEN AIR INCIDENT AFTERMATH

Villar: DFA, DOLE should intercede for OFWs affected by canceled flights

Senator Cynthia Villar on Monday urged the government to intercede to ensure that overseas Filipino workers who were not able to fly out of the country and return to their work abroad would not have problems with their employers.
Villar said the Departments of Foreign Affairs and Labor and Employment should help OFWs affected by the canceled fights when a Xiamen Air plane skidded off the runway of Ninoy Aquino International Airport last week.
“I think it’s the problem of our government dealing with OFWs, dalawa lang iyan DFA at DOLE. They have to act to make sure (there won’t be any problem). I think it’s for our government, DFA and DOLE to help them,” she said when asked on the matter.
The senator expressed hope the employers would understand the situation of their Filipino staff.
“I’m sure iyong mga employer they will understand nasira iyong airport paano naman makakarating sa kanila? Masyado namang short-sighted iyong one or two days lang na-delay mawawalan na ng trabaho,” she said.
She said it is not the fault of the workers that they were not able to return on time.
“Dapat tulungan na nila in case magkaproblema pagdating nila sa abroad kasi na-delay sila. Kasi hindi naman kasalanan ng mga workers talagang nagkaproblema na beyond their control,” she added.
