13 OFWs return from troubled Iraq

FOLLOWING the abuses and maltreatment, resulting in violent deaths, of Filipino household service workers in Kuwait, the Department of Labor and Employment is set to impose a total ban on deployment to the Middle East country.

A highly-placed source at the DOLE said the resolution based on the recommendation of Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III was already approved by the governing board of the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration but is yet to be signed.
“Hinihintay na lang ang mga pipirma. Pero aprubado na yung resolution. The deployment ban is a result of the instances of abuses and maltreatment of our overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) there for the past two years, starting with Joanna Demafelis hanggang dito nga kay Jenealyn Villavende. Hindi convincing yung pinadala ng Kuwaiti government na autopsy report, mukhang may attempt to cover up,” the source told People’s Journal.
The resolution, which will be effective immediately, imposes a total ban on the deployment of all household service workers (HSWs). Domestic workers in Kuwait will be allowed to finish their current contracts but will no longer be allowed to renew after the contract ends.
The source said the only exemption to the ban are highly-skilled OFWs but upon the approval of the labor secretary.
