New PHL consul general to Riyadh assumes post

Philippine officials in Saudi Arabia expect to improve their services to Filipinos in the Kingdom with the arrival of a career foreign service officer at the Philippine Embassy in Riyadh. Ambassador Ezzedin Tago said new consul general Marshall Louis Alferez will be a "valuable addition" to the embassy, Saudi news site Arab News has reported. "I welcome him as a valuable addition to the Philippine Embassy. He’s competent and his posting here will be a valuable experience for him as a Filipino diplomat,"  Tago said . Tago said Alferez will supervise the embassy's consular and assistance to nationals sections. PHL team bags 62 medals in 2013 handgun championship in New Zealand

The Philippine delegation won 62 medals in the recent International Practical Shooting Confederation Australasia (IPCSA) 2013 Handgun Championship in New Zealand. Team Philippines raked in 30 gold, 22 silver and 10 bronze medals in the competition held for the first time in Rotorua from February 26 to March 2, a news release of the Department of Foreign Affairs said. With over 750 participants hailing from 25 countries, the Philippines won 10 events in the Standard Division, 10 in the Production Division, 6 in the Open Division, 4 in the Classic Division and 2 in the Revolver Division. POEA exec reminds Pinoys about telltale signs of illegal recruitment

Philippine Overseas Employment Administration administrator Hans Cacdac reminded overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to watch out for the telltale signs of illegal recruitment. For those applying for jobs abroad, Cacdac recommends checking if one or all of the following signs of illegal recruitment ring a bell with your agency: -- they ask for immediate payment even if you have concrete job offer yet -- they have no headquarters, or they conduct house-to-house recruitment -- they like to show pictures of beautiful houses, cars, or land titles, and tell you the same fate awaits you if you work with them If the following sound achingly familiar, it would be wise to do a double-take as you could fall prey to victims of illegal recruiters. 31 Pinays arrive in PHL from strife-torn Syria

A group of 31 Filipinas arrived in Manila from strife-torn Syria on Wednesday with the help of Philippine embassies in Damascus and Beirut.   The group arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal I aboard Qatar Airways flight QR 646   They were first brought to Beirut before being flown to Manila where they were welcomed by personnel from the Department of Foreign Affairs and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration.   The group's arrival brings the total number of Filipino repatriates from Syria to 3,764.   The DFA also reiterates its appeal to Filipinos in Syria to avail of the repatriation process to avoid being caught in the crossfire.   Chemical warfare   The Syrian conflict between its government and rebels have been ongoing for two years.   This has resulted in countless dead with the recent clash between the two groups resulting in alleged usage of chemical weapons against each other....
