Utah cops nab Pinoy over shooting incident that left 1 dead

Published  May 29, 2019 10:00am  A Filipino suspect has been arrested in Utah over a shooting incident that resulted in one fatality, GMA News’ Unang Balita reported Wednesday. Utah police said Jonathan Llana (a Filipino) fired shots while on a vehicle on an interstate highway on May 22. An American driver was declared dead on the spot, and his companions were wounded. Authorities chased Llana and arrested him after his getaway car (which was stolen) fell into a ditch. Llana is facing murder and attempted murder cases. An investigation is underway to determine Llana’s motive for the the shooting.  —Joviland Rita/LBG, GMA News

CHR seeks review of labor agreements with Kuwait, Saudi Arabia

Published  May 28, 2019 6:20pm  Deeply saddened by the brutal death of a Filipino domestic worker in Kuwait and the abuse inflicted on another in Saudi Arabia, the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) stressed the need for the review of the Philippines' labor agreements with the two countries "to guarantee non-repetition and to improve working conditions." In a statement, CHR spokesperson Jacqueline de Guia expressed the Commission's deepest sympathies to the family of Constancia Dayag, 47,  who died after allegedly being abused by her employer in Kuwait. The CHR also said it hopes to provide support to Lovely Acosta Ruelo,  who was tied to a tree by her employer in Riyadh,  as she recovers from the trauma she suffered. House panels OK bill creating hospital for OFWs

Published  May 28, 2019 4:29pm  Three House panels have consecutively approved a measure seeking to establish a dedicated hospital for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and their dependents. The House Committee on Health joint with the Committee on Appropriations on Monday approved House Bill 9194, principally authored no less than by Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, while the House Committee on Ways and Means approved the measure's tax provision on Tuesday. Under the measure, a hospital, to be called the OFW Hospital, will be developed to cater to the health care needs of Filipino migrant workers and their families. The said hospital will be under the full administrative and technical supervision of the Department of Health and will serve as the primary referral hospital for repatriated OFWs who need medical assistance and support. Kuwait authorities file charges vs. employer over death of OFW Dayag

Published  May 25, 2019 10:47pm  Kuwait authorities have filed charges against a suspect in the killing of Filipina domestic worker Constancia Dayag, Bernadette Reyes reported Saturday on GMA News TV Live. Citing information from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the report said the Kuwaiti General Prosecutor's Office charged the OFW's Kuwaiti employer identified as Bader Ibrahim Mohammad Hussain with felony murder. As Dayag's loved ones paid their last respects at her wake in her hometown of Angadanan, Isabela, the DFA broke the news about the filing of charges against Hussain. Last May 23, the remains of the 47-year-old mother  arrived from Kuwait. Earlier, the Department of Labor and Employment revealed that  Dayag died after suffering hemotoma and concussions . DFA reminds Filipinos travelling to Hong Kong of prohibited items in transit

Published  May 24, 2019 5:22pm  The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday reiterated its warning to all Filipinos travelling to or transiting through Hong Kong to make sure they are not carrying restricted items in their hand-carried or check-in luggage. According to the advisory, items considered as "prohibited weapons" or "arms" include stun guns, pepper spray and other devices such as tear gas, bullets, batons, flick knives and knuckledusters. These items are restricted are either the Aviation Security Ordinance or the Firearms and Ammunition Ordinance of Hong Kong. "The Hong Kong authorities are strict with the enforcement of the said Ordinance,"  the DFA warned. "All hand-carried and checked-in luggage of passenger are subjected to security screening in the airport terminals," it added. HIV infected 91 OFWs in March

posted  May 25, 2019 at 10:20 pm  by   Manila Standard At least 91 overseas Filipino workers were newly diagnosed as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive in March, up 14 percent from 80 in the same month in 2018, ACTS-OFW said over the weekend. “The March cases brought to 6,524 the cumulative number of OFWs found living with HIV since the government began passive surveillance of the virus in 1984,” said ACTS-OFW Rep. Aniceto Bertiz III. OFWs now comprise 10 percent of the 65,463 confirmed cases listed in the National HIV/AIDS Registry as of March, according to Bertiz. The OFWs in the registry worked abroad within the past five years, either on land or at sea when they were diagnosed HIV-positive, Bertiz said. Many of the OFWs in the registry were from Metro Manila (2,110 cases, or 32 percent); the Calabarzon (1,139 cases, or 17 percent); and Central Luzon (761 cases, or 12 percent). OFWs warned vs. fake tour operators

posted  May 24, 2019 at 11:00 pm  by   Vito Barcelo The Bureau of Immigration warned overseas Filipino workers from tour operators and travel agencies using their companies as fronts in sending undocumented OFWs abroad.   BI Commissioner Jaime Morente issued the warning after learning that two Filipino women, allegedly recruited by a travel agency to work in Qatar, were recently intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Morente said travel agencies who send Filipinos disguised as tourists to work abroad can be held liable for violating the law as they are not authorized and licensed to recruit and deploy overseas job applicants.
