Aussie embassy confirms national's arrest
By Cynthia Balana
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines -- The Australian embassy in Manila confirmed Monday the arrest of an Australian national last Friday in Makati on suspicion of child trafficking.
"We can confirm that an Australian man has been arrested in the Philippines on suspicion of child sex offences,” said Ezekiel Laurence Enrique, the embassy's media/public relations officer, in a statement to the Philippine Daily Inquirer, parent company of INQUIRER.net.
“The Australian government takes child sex allegations very seriously and strongly supports the work of law enforcement agencies to eradicate the vile crime of sexual exploitation of children. The Australian Embassy in Manila is providing consular assistance,” he added.
On Friday, police arrested an Australian program development and operations officer of the World Health Organization (WHO) and a Filipino companion for alleged child trafficking.
The Australian, identified as Marcus Hodge, and his alleged Filipino pimp, were nabbed in a police operation in Rockwell, Makati.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Women and Children Protection Division said that Hodge was caught with a half-naked 12-year-old child inside a car in a condo building's parking lot.
