Egyptian, Pinay acquitted of consensual sex charges in UAE

An Egyptian and a Filipina were acquitted by a United Arab Emirates (UAE) court from charges of consensual sex after managing to convince the court that they were married. A report of the news site Gulf News on Wednesday said the couple landed in court over charges of consensual sex leading to an illegitimate pregnancy. However, they produced before Dubai Misdemeanor Court Judge Mohammad Ahmad Shoaib a translated copy of their marriage contract obtained from the Philippine Consulate. Court records showed the Egyptian manager, 29, met the Filipina saleswoman, 33, on Facebook and developed a relationship with her. The report said the Filipina then moved into the man's flat in Bur Dubai. They lived together for two years before the Filipina got pregnant, then went home to the Philippines and delivered her baby. When she returned with her baby to Dubai, she went with the Egyptian to the Consulate and obtained a birth certificate and Filipino passport. She gave her son an Arabic name, the Gulf News report said. However, the couple landed in court over a financial dispute that prompted the man to file a complaint against the Filipina for allegedly harassing and cursing him over the phone. At the time, the police questioned them about their relationship and the couple admitted having a love affair that resulted in a baby boy. However, they pleaded not guilty and claimed in court that they were married when they had sex. On the other hand, their lawyer argued before the judge that his client did not commit a crime. The lawyer provided the court with a marriage contract issued and attested by the civil authorities in the Philippines. The Egyptian also provided the judge with a copy of his passport confirming that he traveled to the Philippines at a date matching to the date of their marriage. - VVP, GMA News
