PHL repatriates 30 runaway Pinay workers from Kuwait

Philippine labor officials have repatriated at least 30 runaway Filipina workers from Kuwait from May 6 to 9, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said. The DOLE said this brought down the number of wards at the Philippine Overseas Labor Office in Kuwait from 262 last May 6 to 176 as of May 9. In a news release on Tuesday, the DOLE said it also endorsed 55 more runaway workers to the Immigration and Deportation Center for eventual travel to the Philippines. Kuwait-based Labor Attache David Des Dicang said that of the 85 workers to be repatriated, eight stayed at the Filipino Workers Resource Center (FWRC) for more than a year. “What is heartening was the assurance of the Kuwait Immigration Office that it will (be) compelling the workers’ sponsors to shoulder the return tickets to the Philippines or face the prospect of being blacklisted,” Dicang added. On the other hand, he said the POLO in Kuwait is arranging for the repatriation of another 100 FWRC residents in the next days, which will bring down the number of wards to less than 100. He noted the POLO-Kuwait accepts or receives five to 20 runaway female workers daily. On the other hand, Dicang submitted the names of 50 OFWs who have no travel bans so they can be issued air tickets to return home, subject to availability of flights. Resolution of cases Dicang said the POLO continues to fast-track the resolution of cases of household service workers strictly verifying employment documents of workers holding Visa 20, or HSWs. He said the measures would lessen the number of OFW runaways at the Center. They would also suspend processing of employment documents of foreign recruitment agencies (FRAs) and Philippine licensed recruitment agencies (PRAs) which have a single runaway worker residing at the FWRC, he added. Earlier, DOLE Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz commended the POLO in Kuwait for speeding up the repatriation of workers and transforming the FWRC as a “center of excellence.” “Secretary Baldoz was very much pleased that POLO-Kuwait was able to successfully negotiate with officials of the Kuwait Immigration Office to speed up repatriation of runaway workers with absconding cases,” Dicang said. - VVP, GMA News
