Gawad Mabini award conferred on retired PHL Ambassador to Chile

The Gawad Mabini Award, Rank of Grand Cross (Dakilang Kamanong) was recently conferred on retired Philippine Ambassador to Chile Rodolfo Arizala.

In a news release on Friday, the Department of Foreign Affairs said the award was conferred in "a simple yet meaningful ceremony" at the Philippine Embassy in Santiago, Chile on September 30.

Arizala was supposed to receive the award personally from President Benigno Simeon Aquino III at the DFA headquarters in Manila in July.

The awarding was part of the celebration of two events: the 148th birthday of Mabini, the Philippines' first Foreign Affairs Secretary, and the 114th anniversary of the DFA.

The Gawad Mabini award was named after Philippine hero Apolinario Mabini (July 23, 1864 — May 13, 1903), who is known as "The Sublime Paralytic" and "The Brains of the Revolution."

As Arizala could not travel from his home in Chile to Manila for the awarding rite, the DFA decided to transmit the award to the Embassy in Santiago, Chile.

Philippine Ambassador to Chile Maria Consuelo Puyat-Reyes conferred the award on Arizala on behalf of the President.

During the ceremony, Arizala expressed his gratitude for the award and thanked the President that he was the only retired ambassador to have received the award. - VVP, GMA News
